An article from our NWCC CEO - Robert Ellis
At NWCC, one responsibility matters more than any other: the safety and wellbeing of every child entrusted to our care.
When families bring their children to OOSH, they are placing something precious in our hands. We never take that trust for granted. We want every child who walks through our doors to know that they are welcome, that they matter, and that the adults around them are there to care for them.
Child safety is about more than preventing accidents or having the right policies in place, although these are crucial foundations. It is about creating an environment where children feel safe, are treated with respect, and know that their voices will be heard.
Safety is everyone’s responsibility
A safe OOSH environment is built through everyday actions. It means our educators being attentive and engaged, knowing where children are, responding appropriately when something is wrong, and helping children feel comfortable speaking up.
It also means teaching children that their feelings and concerns matter. Every child should know they can talk to a trusted adult if something worries them, if someone makes them feel uncomfortable, or if they simply need help. Children should never feel that they have to manage a difficult situation alone.
As parents and carers, you play an important part too. Regular conversations with your child about their day can help them share both the good experiences and anything that may be troubling them. Often as parents we will offer the question “How was school today?” or “How was OOSH?” and receive a basic answer “Good”. Simple questions such as “Did you feel safe today?”, “Was there anything that made you uncomfortable?” or “Is there anything you would like me to know?” can open up deeper conversations. Listen calmly, take concerns seriously and reassure your child that they have done the right thing by speaking up.
“Our commitment is simple: every child matters, every concern matters, and child safety always comes first.”
Building a culture of care
Child safety must be reflected in the way an organisation operates, not simply written in a policy. In NSW, strengthened child-safe requirements took effect in April 2026, reinforcing the responsibility of education and care services to put children’s safety, welfare and wellbeing first. These requirements include clear procedures for staff training, responding to concerns, assessing risks and ensuring children are accounted for throughout the day.
At NWCC, this responsibility calls us to keep learning, to review our practices, to listen carefully to children and families, and to act when something needs attention. We must be willing to ask difficult questions and address concerns promptly and appropriately.
Working together
We know that trust is built through consistent actions, honest communication and a willingness to listen. If you have a question or concern about your child’s safety or experience at OOSH, please speak with your Nominated Supervisor or contact our team. We want concerns to be raised, heard and addressed.
Thank you for partnering with us in this important responsibility. Every child deserves to feel safe, valued and heard — and together, we can help make that a daily reality.
